“In the spring of this year, 2025, Jiangyan Feng, a close friend of some years, visited my home for a conversation and, evidently, to practice Reiki supervised deep relaxation upon me as a subject.
I recall very little about the specifics of the session, during which I was asked to lie on a couch, close my eyes, and make an effort to clear my mind. Jiangyan used an app on her phone to generate either soft music or white noise (perhaps green noise) and read from a prepared script.
It is important to note that I am a cancer patient on long chemo, and as a consequence have sustained neurological injuries that deaden the nerves in my hands and feet. My CDL was cancelled and I had only been cleared to drive, and been issued a new license, about six weeks previously.
After Jiangyan left, this being a Sunday afternoon, I decided to take my car out for a drive, and did so - ranging out a conservative distance for the first time in more than two years. I did not link the two events that day in any way, strangely, until later. And I did tell Jiangyan later still, to let her know, still unsure what the deep relaxation session might have to do with the recovery of a common skill I had lost.”

In October of 2025 Jiangyan Feng’s interest in these healing practices continued, with an eye toward becoming a practitioner. She stopped by on a Saturday and, for this one, had me lie down on a carpeted and was very specific about how she wanted me to be positioned - face up, eyes closed, hands open with the palms up. She then began, reading word-for-word from a text.
I can say that the text, as she pronounced each word slowly, was highly conducive to very deep relaxation. I distinctly recall her making the timeless “OM” chant, on my left side, and then resume the text from my right side.
My recollection is clearly inaccurate, though. At the end, I felt certain that I had heard every word. Jiangyan told me she had heard me snoring. Impossible, I said. She then asked me how long the session had lasted. I guessed about 20 minutes. She assured me it had taken exactly one hour.
I found this disturbing, since she had said it was important that I try to stay awake. The result raises the question of how receptive the subject is to suggestion in that borderline state between waking and sleeping.
Jiangyan asked me to report any dreaming from that night. I rarely recall dreams. Most people don’t. But in the first ninety minutes of sleep that night I did dream quite vividly that I was walking around, going up flights of stairs, in all respects fine - no cancer, no neuropathy, no anemia, no difficulty walking, no dizziness, but a feeling of perfect health that was mine less than three years ago.
I am not “healed.” But my mind seems to have been tricked into thinking I was. I suppose that’s the next-best thing.”
